Ball Corporation (ball.com) received Can of the Year honors for three packaging innovations at the 2013 Canmaker Summit, held recently in Edinburgh, Scotland. In the beverage two-piece category, the Coors Light World's Most Refreshing Can™ won a gold award and the Coca-Cola Dynamark™ can won a silver award. In the aerosol category, the Fa Sport Ultimate Dry impact extruded can won a silver award.

"Leveraging our know-how and technological expertise to provide a competitive advantage is a key tenet of Ball's Drive for 10 vision," says Jay Billings, vice president of innovation for Ball's global metal beverage segment. "Our persistent focus on innovation enables us to provide industry-leading packaging solutions that help build our customers' brands. This recognition of our beverage and aerosol packaging innovations is an honor and a testament to this focus and our investments in technology and innovation over the years."

The Coors Light "World's Most Refreshing Can" combines several different innovative features, including a double-vented wide mouth for a smoother pour, a Frost Brew® liner to lock in the Frost Brewed® taste, cold-activated mountains and two-stage cold indicators.

Launched in early April of 2013, the winning Coca-Cola can features Ball's newly developed Dynamark variable printing technology, which can be integrated into the existing printing process for all sizes of steel and aluminum cans. By enabling up to 24 different monochromatic graphic elements to be added to a defined vacant area of, or supplemental to, the basic can design. Dynamark can incorporate logos, icons or individualized messages into the can appearance. Dynamark allows variability in the graphic design at normal production speed.

The Fa Sport Ultimate Dry deodorant can, a collaboration between Ball and Henkel, is a lighter, extruded aluminum can made using Ball's revolutionary metal technology, which utilizes recycled aluminum to create a metal alloy that exhibits increased strength and allows lightweighting of the container without affecting package integrity. This breakthrough technology allows Ball to lightweight its extruded aluminum aerosol packaging by as much as 10%, with further lightweighting expected in the future.

An international competition sponsored each year by The Canmaker, the Can of the Year awards celebrate innovation in cans and closures throughout the metal packaging industry.
