Rollprint Packaging Products Inc. (rollprint.com) debuts FormFoil™ Lite, a greener, more cost effective version of the standard cold form foil structures currently in the marketplace. To achieve this, Rollprint uses a proprietary manufacturing process that permits the use of 1 mil in place of the 2 mil foil used in conventional cold-form foil applications. The end result is a material that maintains robust formability, reduces consumption of natural resources, and provides significant reduction in costs.

FormFoil Lite is designed to help many organizations meet their cost reduction and environmental impact goals in a variety of commercial applications including sutures, diagnostics devices and surgical tools. The director of manufacturing at one suture manufacturer chose the lighter cold-form foil because “Rollprint’s FormFoil Lite has allowed us to downgauge our formable foil thickness.” He continues that the change has “…reduced our environmental footprint and lowered costs.” All of this, he says “without sacrificing quality or shelf life.”

Dwane Hahn, VP of sales and marketing, expects the more economical FormFoil Lite to reinvigorate the use of cold-form by making it more competitive with other more traditional package formats where perfect oxygen and/or moisture barrier is required.

“We’ve had success in a wide variety of cold-form shapes and formats across markets ranging from medical device to consumer applications.” Hahn says. He describes how Rollprint has been able to create a cold-form structure with its ClearFoil® high barrier clear lidding while continuing to maintain the "nearly 0% moisture and oxygen transmission rates that aluminum foil is known for."

FormFoil Lite benefits include:

  • Downgauging the foil layer
  • Requires less energy and material to produce decreasing the environmental/carbon footprint
  • Ease of machinability and formability with less material
  • Reducing costs allow for a cold form foil package to compete with more traditional package styles
