Anti Counterfeit, Brand Protection & Tamper Evident Solutions - Supplier Industry Structure
The landscape for the Brand Protection business has been evolving substantially in the last few years and continues to do so. The scale and reach of the counterfeiting problem continues to explode primarily due to two crucial forces that in particular have been causing accelerated growth of counterfeit parts finding their way in to global supply chains:
• The economic boom of China and the shifting of many Western manufacturing operations to that region coupled with the fact that China has become the number one counterfeiter in the World ‐ both for exports and within their own home market (India too is seeing rapid industrial grow and needs careful monitoring in future especially where counterfeit pharmaceuticals are involved). According to the International Anti Counterfeiting Coalition, some 85% of counterfeit branded products originate in China.
• The rapid growth of the internet as a tool for buying and selling almost anything worldwide, either by direct website / email contact or via on‐line auction houses like eBay. Face to face transactions are not required and the anonymity that can be maintained suits counterfeiters well. Neither may products be inspected prior to delivery. Such internet based sales of counterfeits involving direct website / email contact, following a ‘Google’ search or by other means, favours a variety of categories from pharmaceutical products like Viagra to electronic microchips and integrated circuits for the manufacture of consumer electronics and other electronic products. On‐line auction houses like eBay particularly suit counterfeiters of certain product categories. eBay have taken some measures to combat these problems, although how effective these measures are is still a matter of contention.
Fraudsters, competitors and even business partners are continually finding new ways to exploit the power of the internet at the expense of brand owners.
A very noticeable and important trend has been taking place in the brand protection industry. During the last two decades the industry has been highly fragmented, populated by several hundred disparate technology and service providers all competing in attempting to address the various needs of brand owners.
So what does the future hold? Will some cataclysmic future event(s) be enough to persuade brand owners and / or governments that brand protection should be taken to another level? We cannot know what the future holds, but in these uncertain times there is good reason to think that surprising events will continue to unfold.
What is certain is that companies that develop effective integrated brand protection solutions today will be well placed to meet the future needs of the industry whatever they may be. Companies that do not prepare and then try to react to such future (yet to be foreseen) events from a standing start are unlikely to do well. Equally the wise brand owner is already becoming well versed in the possible options for defense against the pernicious and ever growing menace of counterfeiting and other types of product crime.
