What’s new in labels? Avery Dennison will tell you—a lot.

Avery’s Label and Packaging Materials unit will be exhibiting at Pack Expo. Among the products and solutions it will show are the following:

Craft beer

Avery has a craft beer portfolio that features paper, film, and even wood labels. Beers are problematic for label makers, because their coldness creates condensation that makes them wrinkle and peel off. Craft beermakers, too, are a small market and typically can’t afford the long press runs of a big brewers.

“But they still want all the choices to give them a unique” place on the shelves, said Avery spokesman Mark Bouffard. Avery has created paper and film beer labels with stronger adhesives that stay on the bottles and resist tear. It offers semi-gloss, metallic and other effects.

For AC Golden Brewing Co.’s Hidden Barrel Collection line, Avery created a label made with real wood. The Easson Cherry Veneer echoes the aging in wooden barrels. “Just as the wood barrels add complexity and illuminate the flavors in the beer, the wood label illuminates the most intriguing points of our grand story,” said Glenn Knippenberg, president and co-founder of AC Golden.

Avery supplied the material—which includes an AT20N adhesive and a PET liner. AC Golden worked with converter Symth Companies Inc. The labels were printed on flexographic and UV digital ink jet presses--ideal for the short runs needed for Hidden Barrel’s batches of approximately 1,100 bottles.

PET bottles

Avery Dennison is committed to building a more sustainable value chain behind its pressure-sensitive labels used for PET water and other drinks bottles. The company sought to improve recycling efficiencies and the quality of post-consumer plastics by launching its CleanFlake line. The portfolio includes a switchable label adhesive, SR3010, that separates from the PET flake upon recycling. The water-based adhesive adheres to the PET bottle until the sink/float process at the recycler. No residual adhesive remains on the PET flake.

The CleanFlake labels come in clear and white BOPP facestocks with a density of less than 1.0. Along with the acrylic water-based adhesive, the facestock materials feature two ultrathin PET liners in 92-gauge and 75-gauge.

They have passed the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers protocol for PET containers.
