FPA’s Sterilization Manufacturers Council (SPMC) Executive Council held its annual meeting in New York on June 12, 2014. Representatives from all eight member companies participated in the meeting. SPMC celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, a timeline of its activities over these years is posted on SPMC website, www.sterilizationpackaging.org. The website which is a resource for medical device manufacturers, offers technical guidance on issues related to sterilization packaging of medical devices.

A progress update for activities of the Marketing and Technical committees was provided by respective committee chairs. Marie Tkacik, SPMC Technical Committee chair since the committee formed, was recognized for her leadership. Under her leadership the committee has developed several Test Methods and Guidance Documents, many of which have become ASTM Standards. SPMC Technical Group was a major contributor to the development of ISO 11607 Standard.  Robert Fry, a DuPont economist, was the guest speaker at the meeting and provided his insights into future market development of packaging for medical devices.
