At the recent FPA Annual Meeting, Captain Scott Kelly, History-Making U.S. Astronaut & Retired U.S. Navy Captain, captivated FPA members during his address. Captain Kelly discussed his reflections on leadership, teamwork, and testing limits that he learned while on his year long, record-breaking voyage 229 miles above Earth, and provided unique and valuable advice on pushing one’s own limits.

It’s important to do the hard things in life, he said. To be successful in life, you must have a goal; develop a plan with small, meaningful steps; take risks; be not afraid to fail; focus on things you can control and ignore those that you can’t; and work as a team. If you fail at something, it is better to have it happen while attempting something really hard. Never be comfortable with the status quo. In order to be a great leader, you have to be a follower first. Teamwork is very important; a team is what makes the dream work. Just by following these simple steps, the sky is not the limit.
