European packaging manufacturer Coveris has introduced MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist, a paper alternative for confectionery packaging.

This innovative paper solution replaces less sustainable alternatives commonly used for twist-wrapped confectionery products, including lollipops, hard candies and chocolates, as well as heat-sealable flow-pack packaging for bars and sticks. Designed to meet the industry's 95/5 guidelines for paper recyclability, the lightweight material offers reliable product protection and efficiency on high-speed packaging lines.

In 2026, confectionery manufacturers face the complex challenge of reconciling recyclability, material performance and legal requirements. Regulatory drivers such as the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR), Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), and country-specific packaging taxes are making sustainability a requirement rather than an option. Specifically for example, this means that paper packaging may contain a maximum of five percent non-paper components to be considered recyclable. Brands are therefore increasingly focusing on solutions that are recyclable, integrate seamlessly into existing recycling systems and generate lower CO₂ emissions.

“MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist supports this change by helping brands reduce their plastic content without compromising product protection and packaging efficiency. By finding the most environmentally and functionally compelling solution for every application, we enable our customers to balance regulatory requirements, costs and performance and to consistently align their packaging with their sustainability goals,” explained Melinda Bonamour, Business Development Manager Paper Consumer & Healthcare at Coveris.

Coveris' new solution consists of a single layer of lightweight functional paper and offers a reliable seal as primary packaging for single or double-twisted candies, chocolate pralines, and lollipops as well as for heat-sealed chocolate bars in flow packs. Furthermore, it features excellent printability for gravure, flexographic, and digital printing. Switching to this paper structure requires no major modifications to existing machinery, and it can be efficiently implemented on high-speed and standard FFS packaging lines.

MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist also meets the stricter recycling requirements for packaging waste. This is a crucial factor in the confectionery sector, where material performance and recyclability must be carefully balanced. The PPWR introduces stricter requirements for recyclability and higher recycling targets. For example, it stipulates that all packaging placed on the market must be recyclable by 2030.

“These legal changes extend producer responsibility to the post-consumer sector and drive up the costs of plastic packaging. MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist takes these new conditions into account and offers confectionery manufacturers a solution that complies with industry guidelines for 95/5 paper recyclability,” said Melinda Bonamour.

Visit Coveris partner GEA at the interpack trade fair from May 7th to 13th, 2026, in Düsseldorf to experience MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist live. GEA can be found in Hall 6 at booth C27.
