Printing: Digital Printing

Labels & Packaging Use Digital Techniques

By Erin J. Wolford, Contributing writer
February 2, 2015

While attending Pack Expo this past November, I had the opportunity to meet the man whose company purchased a new machine, of which sat in the HP booth. Joshua Jenks, president of Target Labels and Packaging, proudly shook my hand as we stood in front of the HP Indigo 20000, and he gave me a quick rundown of the company, what they do, and explained to me the company’s operations.

Flexible Packaging: Please tell me about your company.

Joshua Jenks: As a private company, we continue to achieve sustained growth, averaging more than 30 percent each year, employing a workforce of 35 with one plant location.

FP: What do you believe is helping the company to succeed in business?

Jenks: We are able to succeed in business by investing in new state-of-the-art equipment, providing existing and prospective customers unique products and capabilities that competitors cannot match. We offer narrow web, wide web and digital printing capabilities, along with laminations, pouches, shrink sleeves, roll stock and all finishing in one facility. The combination of all of these capabilities, along with quality, shortened lead times and competitive pricing, sets Target Labels and Packaging apart from the competition.

FP: What kinds of flexible packaging capabilities do you have to offer to your customers?

Jenks: We offer customers pouches, shrink sleeves, stick packs, poly bags, multi-ply construction, solvent-free laminations and specialty films for multiple form, fill and seal applications, using horizontal and vertical FFS machines.

FP: What’s your best-selling film or product?

Jenks: Our success has come with the hard-to-fill packaging, varying from simple structures to complex structures with directional tear properties or easy tear properties. One of our most successful films is a liquid fill film for a horizontal machine. The liquid is filled at 200F with a low PH. We have worked to develop a film that has increased productivity and decreased waste. In addition, we offer customers technical support on the machines, helping solve errors and issues that arise when changing films. We also offer customized service to find a film that best runs on the equipment.

Our state-of-the-art printing presses print up to eight colors using cutting-edge technology for sharp, clear images. Our precision slitting equipment ensures rolls are slit to meet exact specifications. We develop great products using form, fill and seal equipment from stick packs to pouches, making us a fully integrated flexible converter and packaging company. The HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press further distinguishes Target Labels and Packaging from competitors, enabling us to produce pressure-sensitive labels, shrink sleeves and the vast majority of flexible packaging applications, including those not previously addressable with digital printing technology because of size limitations.

FP: Are you planning on rolling out any new products? What are they?

Jenks: Our new HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press will provide new unique application opportunities for our customers, including short runs, variable data printing and up to 29-inch flexible packaging printing. We also have new proprietary film materials for improved sealing on various applications. Our goal is to provide packaging solution options at any quantity required by customers, while maintaining excellent quality and personal service.

FP: In what areas can your company be used as an example to other converters? In what capacity could other converters look to your company as being the standard, or a template, that they could strive to become?

Jenks: Target Labels and Packaging provides solutions to meet nearly all label and packaging requirements. Our easily-accessible facility, state-of-the-art printing technology, including the HP Indigo 20000 Digital Press, and our unique production capabilities make our company an industry leader.

FP: What can we expect to see from your company in the coming year (or two)?

Jenks: You can expect to see accelerated growth in all packaging categories with increased market share and national awareness.
