As of January 2026, SmartSolve has officially announced the launch of PureNil™ 0, a breakthrough packaging substrate and the world’s first plastic-free, 100% bio-based, and flushable material designed to replace single-use plastics in consumer-packaged goods.

PureNil™ 0 was first introduced publicly in October 2025 and is now commercially available following successful validation and production readiness. After progressing through SmartSolve’s stage-gate R&D process and meeting all required verification points, PureNil™ 0 is officially established as a new product offering and entered ramp production as of January 8, 2026.

A New Generation of Plastic-Free Packaging

PureNil™ 0 was developed to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging materials that deliver the functionality of conventional flexible films without reliance on fossil-derived plastics. The material combines durability, printability and water solubility in a single substrate, offering brands a forward-thinking alternative that aligns with evolving environmental expectations and regulatory pressures.

Designed for real-world manufacturing environments, PureNil™ 0 enables brands to transition to plastic-free packaging substrates without sacrificing performance, efficiency or design flexibility.

Engineered for Performance and Compatibility

PureNil™ 0 is a water-soluble packaging substrate engineered specifically for dry or powdered product formats. The material runs on standard form, fill, and seal equipment, allowing manufacturers to adopt plastic-free solutions without requiring equipment modifications or process changes.

PureNil™ 0 is also fully printable, allowing for print on unit-dose applications, enabling high-quality branding, clear product communication and visual differentiation across a wide range of package sizes. Additionally, it serves as a compelling plastic-free alternative to PVA films, helping brands prepare for evolving legislative requirements while maintaining product protection, consumer convenience and printability.

Versatile Applications Across Multiple Markets

PureNil™ 0 supports a broad range of applications, including:

  • Household cleaning products
  • Feminine care
  • Beauty & personal care
  • Agriculture and home & garden
  • Select healthcare applications
  • Food & beverage

As SmartSolve’s first direct food contact–approved product, PureNil™ 0 expands the company’s portfolio by opening new opportunities such as confectionery packaging, snack formats that do not require high barrier properties and powdered beverage mixes.

PureNil™ 0 is certified for direct food contact and produced in ISO and FSSC 22000 compliant facilities, reinforcing SmartSolve’s commitment to quality, safety and regulatory readiness. The material provides the functionality of traditional flexible films while supporting brands as they navigate increasing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements.

Early Market Validation

The official launch of PureNil™ 0 is already being validated through early commercial adoption. ARC 01, SmartSolve’s first customer for the material, is leveraging PureNil™ 0 to develop an instant coffee package that disperses in water, delivering a consumer experience that is both convenient and environmentally responsible.

Based in Los Angeles, California, ARC 01 reflects a new generation of brands operating at the forefront of sustainable packaging regulation. Their adoption of PureNil™ 0 demonstrates how technical innovation, thoughtful design and sustainability readiness can converge without compromising performance or usability.

“ARC 01’s single-serve coffee packets formed of PureNil™ 0 feel pleasant and natural to the touch, are structured well enough to maintain their integrity and protect their contents, are easy to tear and pour, and can be deployed and disposed of anywhere,” ARC 01 founder Aron Pobereskin shared.
