Sonoco Recognizes Sustainable Facilities

October 27, 2015

Sonoco has given its Sonoco Sustainability Star Awards to seven North America plants for their successful efforts to reduce their waste to landfill and implement sustainability practices.

Administered by Sonoco Recycling, the Sonoco Sustainability Star Awards program is comprised of three tiers. Gold awards recognize facilities that have achieved 99 percent landfill diversion; silver awards recognize facilities achieving 95 percent landfill diversion; and bronze awards recognize facilities that have made significant waste reduction achievements.

Star Awards were given to the following facilities:

·         Dillons Jackson Dairy, Hutchinson, Kansas (Gold)

·         Sonoco Display and Packaging, Bolingbrook, Illinois (Silver)

·         Sonoco Paper, Brantford, Ontario (Bronze)

·         Sonoco Plastics, Addison, Illinois (Bronze)

·         Sonoco Plastics, Forest City, North Carolina (Bronze)

·         Sonoco Plastics, Waynesville, North Carolina (Bronze)

·         Sonoco Protective Solutions, New Bern, North Carolina (Silver)

“Their ingenuity and commitment have produced great results that set an example for any manufacturing facility to follow,” says Mike Pope, commercial director of Sonoco Recycling.

Sonoco’s Display and Packaging plant in Bolingbrook, Illinois, has diverted 95 percent of its waste from landfill. The facility also recycles all recyclable materials and donates some obsolete consumables.

Sonoco Plastics in Addison, Illinois, has reduced its waste to landfill by more than half from 2013 to 2014, and has further reduced waste to landfill in 2015.

Sonoco Plastics in Forest City, North Carolina, has increased its recycling output, and the facility is on track to reduce its waste to landfill by more than 70 percent year over year.

Sonoco Plastics in Waynesville, North Carolina, has reduced its waste to landfill by increasing its OCC and packaging recycling. Employees have also been able to reduce landfill usage by 45 percent.

Sonoco Protective Solutions in New Bern, North Carolina, has worked with an external partner to achieve 95 percent landfill diversion through recycling.
