UFlex secures patent for advanced reclosable packaging for large-format bags

India-based multinational flexible packaging and solutions company UFlex Limited has secured an Indian patent for its advanced reclosable packaging for large-format bags. The patent is valid for a period of 20 years from the date of filing.

The solution is specifically designed for large-format packs that are opened and resealed multiple times before their contents are fully consumed, particularly for products such as pet food, coffee, fertilizers and flour, to name a few. It is suitable for products that require protection from moisture, oxygen and contaminants during storage, transportation and repeated use, the company says.

The patented design integrates secure reclosure, a feature to detect tampering and an enhanced barrier protection into a single packaging solution, enabling products to remain securely protected until the first use while continuing to safeguard the contents after the package has been opened and resealed multiple times.

One of the key features of the design is its specially engineered protective thin layer positioned beneath the zipper assembly. Even if the zipper is opened, the product inside cannot be accessed without tearing the thin layer, providing a clear visual indication of tampering, UFlex explains. Once opened, the zipper allows for the package to be securely reclosed, while the integrated barrier structure continues to protect the remaining product from environmental factors such as moisture, gases and contaminants.

“As products are increasingly being sold in large-format packs, packaging must do much more than simply contain the product,” said Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, president, flexible packaging and new product development at UFlex Limited, in a statement. “It must protect product integrity throughout its lifecycle while giving consumers confidence that the packaging is secure and has not been opened before purchase. This innovation is particularly relevant for products that are vulnerable to package tampering, product substitution and counterfeiting.

“By combining a feature to detect tampering, enhanced barrier protection and secure reclosure, it helps brand owners safeguard product authenticity, preserve brand reputation and strengthen consumer confidence,” Pillai continued.

UFlex uses the example of a large pack of pet food or protein powder, which may be opened and resealed several times over the course of several weeks. Brand owners, retailers, whole sellers and consumers need the assurance that the package has remained unopened before the first use and that the remaining contents continue to be protected throughout repeated use. With UFlex’s patented solution, both these requirements are addressed in a single package by combining product security, convenience and long-term protection.

The barrier properties of the package can also be tailored to suit the protection requirements of different products, making the solution suitable for a wide range of food, pharmaceutical, chemical and industrial packaging applications, UFlex adds. The integrated design eliminates the need for additional sealing mechanisms, making it a practical and cost-effective packaging solution.
