Bag-in-box packaging remains the dominant format for cereal, offering efficiency, protection, and familiarity across high-speed packaging operations. However, once the inner bag is opened, this format has consistently lacked an effective way for consumers to reclose it. The result is a predictable set of issues—spillage, loss of freshness, and increased food waste over the life of the package.

The recent launch of Roll&Seal was driven by this persistent gap. The system was developed specifically for bag-in-box applications, with the goal of improving post-opening performance while remaining compatible with existing packaging lines.

Reseal to Contain and Keep Cereal Fresh

From a consumer standpoint, cereal is rarely consumed in a single use. Bags are opened repeatedly, often folded or loosely tucked back into the carton. Over time, this leads to air exposure, staling, and mess—issues that have gone largely unaddressed in current cereal packaging.

Roll&Seal adds a pressure-sensitive reseal directly to the inner cereal bag, enabling it to be reclosed throughout the product’s use cycle. The reseal is applied near the top of the bag, where it is easy for consumers to find and use.

After opening the bag, the consumer pours cereal, removes the reseal tape, rolls the bag down, and reapplies the tape over the rolled section. On subsequent uses, the tape is lifted, the bag is accessed again, and the process is repeated. Because the reseal is integrated into the original bag, consumers do not need to transfer cereal into another container or rely on external clips or ties.

This approach helps keep cereal contained and fresher between uses, while also reducing spillage and food waste—particularly in larger box formats.

Avoiding Re-Packaging and Added Components

An important design consideration was preserving the simplicity of the existing bag-in-box package. A simple tape allows for an easily resealable package without the need for a separate closure device. 

The reseal tape can be fully removed during use, which is particularly helpful when handling larger or heavier bags. Once the bag is rolled down, the tape is reapplied over the roll, keeping the bag closed and contained inside the carton.

Easy Retrofit System for Bag-In-Box Packaging Lines

From a packaging standpoint, Roll&Seal was designed as an easy retrofit system. The applicator installs in the film unwind area, allowing reseal functionality to be added without altering forming, filling, or sealing stations.

The system consists of the PLC controlled applicator and the tape unwind supplying tape on demand. 

This configuration allows the reseal feature to be applied in-line at production speeds consistent with cereal packaging operations.

A single roll of Roll&Seal tape can reseal more than 21,000 cereal packages, supporting extended run times and minimizing changeovers.

Intermittent Feature Application at Line Speed

Roll&Seal applies a short, intermittent length of reseal tape, rather than a continuous strip. For bag-in-box applications, this provides several advantages.

The tape is placed away from primary seal areas, reducing concerns about seal interference. Intermittent application also limits material usage to what is functionally required, supporting both cost control and sustainability objectives.

The applicator applies the tape with registered printed usage directions, consistently positioning it near the top of the bag and in register with the end seal. This repeatable placement supports consumer usability while maintaining operational predictability.

Cost-Effective and Sustainable by Design

By minimizing tape length and applying it only where needed, Roll&Seal is positioned as a cost-effective reseal solution for cereal packaging. The lightweight applicator and unwind area integration limit added complexity on the line, while reduced material usage supports waste reduction goals.

Early Evaluation in the Cereal Market

As part of its launch phase, Roll&Seal is being trialed and market-tested. The evaluation reflects industry interest in reseal solutions that can be implemented within existing cereal packaging systems rather than requiring new formats or major equipment changes.

Closing a Persistent Cereal Packaging Gap 

For years, cereal consumers have experienced the same challenges once a bag-in-box package is opened. Roll&Seal was developed to address that reality by combining a straightforward consumer interaction with a packaging-line-compatible implementation.
