Mondi in North America has added three IPN Equipment B.V. spout insertion machines to its Jackson, Mo. portfolio of flexible package production equipment, an addition that enables the converter to further strengthen its position in the growing migration of consumer goods from rigid to flexible packaging. It also supports increasing market demand for spouted baby food and fruit product pouches.
“Mondi is qualified by customers, co-packers and the National Food Laboratory for retort and hot fill spouted pouches used on a variety of filling lines,” says Markus Hoedebeck, vice president of product development, Mondi Jackson. “Our new equipment can accurately insert spouts ranging from 8 mm to 36 mm in diameter into flexible pouches at a rate of up to 120 per minute, which helps us achieve fast turnaround. Spouts for large pouches can be inserted to a pouch’s top corner at 0 to 45 degree angles or straight up on its top location."
Mondi’s new equipment complements its existing spout inserting machinery, giving the company spout insertion capabilities for a huge size range of pouches. The new equipment consists of three spout insertion machines, a one-up and two-up, and a three-up that is equipped with a robotic case pack unit and a 100 percent inline IR inspection system. In operation, the machines insert fitments into pre-made flexible pouches and then seal them. The finished spouted pouches are then boxed or placed on rails, and then shipped to consumer brands or co-packers for product filling at rates of 50-200 per minute.
“Mondi is in touch every day with its customers’ needs,” Hoedebeck notes. “Our new equipment purchase was inspired by customer input that indicates growing demand in selected areas of the consumer fast goods marketplace.”
