The trend in dairy packaging clear: see-through packaging that shows swirls and colors

Clear and transparent packaging is a hot trend in dairy aisles, showing up in the frozen case and even cultured aisle. Several processors commented that research shows that consumers want to see whatâ??s inside the package.

The packaging concepts showing up in retail dairy cases are becoming more competitive and innovative every day.

Dairy Foods Associate Editor Sarah Kennedy reports that dairy processors manufacturing cheese, butter and cultured product are looking to grab more retail shelf space with compact packaging and easier-to-stack containers. The new shapes contain the same volume as the old ones.

As for makers of dairy-based desserts, they take their cues from gelato and dessert shops. Dairy processors are using clear packaging that shows off every swirl, chunk and color. Even lowly cottage cheese (considered the broccoli of dairy foods because of its healthy connotations) has gotten a beauty makeover with an innovative see-through container. Milk bottlers are not sitting on the sidelines. They are finding ways to grab attention with unique shapes, colors and designs.
