Held in the Coachella Valley in California, this annual music and arts festival is known for championing sustainability, which is why corporate entity PepsiCo Foods North America decided to showcase its Lays chips there in compostable packaging. During the event, consumers can easily toss empty bags into clearly marked compost bins throughout the festival campgrounds.
David Allen, vice president of sustainability, PepsiCo Foods North America, talks about this trial of compostable packaging as part of the company’s journey to 100% recyclable, bio-compostable, or reusable packaging for the future.

Costco Wholesale Corporation engaged Radienz Living in early 2021 to transition the Kirkland Signature® Ultra Clean Laundry Detergent Pacs product from a rigid tub to a fully recyclable, child-resistant pouch. They desired a better consumer experience in the areas of packaging sustainability, transportation, and safety while being more cost-effective, maintaining the existing selling units per pallet, and fully commercialized in 2021. Accredo Packaging, Inc. and Fresh-Lock® closures jumped into collaboration with Radienz Living for an all-hands-on-deck approach.

When Hindustan Petroleum (HP) approached us to design a stand-up pouch to replace the rigid HDPE plastic container, we were excited and nostalgic at the same time. In 1986, Paharpur 3P started its flexible packaging business doing just that - producing stand-up pouches for mobile oil. We had come full circle more than 47-years later. Lubricant oils have a high boiling point, viscosity and resistance to oxidation. Designing a stand-up pouch that would avoid oil migration (hence delamination) while ensuring zero leakage, high dart and puncture resistance was particularly challenging. Other considerations that HP required were; easy-to-fill on PFS lines, consumer-friendly (ease of handling, ease of dispensing, ability to reseal) and shelf-appeal. The final product gave them all of that and then some – reduced transportation and warehousing costs, reduced carbon footprint, and increased margin on the SKU.

MegaFood® needed a child-resistant, senior-friendly flexible pouch for their Women’s Ensemble Preconception Daily Multipack product line. Due to the product’s high iron content, the brand previously packaged its product in child-resistant cartons, but recently switched to flexible pouches to save on costs. Through digital printing on the HP Indigo 20000 digital press, Nosco was able to save the brand more than half the cost of its previous packaging type.
