Brilliant and sustainable packaging ideas dominated proceedings at the 21st European Carton Excellence Awards. The prizes were presented to the winners on September 21 at the Award Gala of the ECMA Congress in the elegant Residenz Building in Salzburg to an international audience of senior personnel from across the industry.

Carton of the Year went to “Geometrie Cividât” from Lucaprint with board supplied by BillerudKorsnas. Cividât is a premium gin from Cividale in Northern Italy that demanded packaging which would complement its unique style and aromatic notes.

The carton stands out through its apparent simplicity and understatement. Interest and curiosity are created by the diagonal cut which divides the symmetry and the strict geometry of the pack. The spherical bottle is secured perfectly inside and conveys a natural impression of balance. The experience of opening and unpacking is unforgettable for both the buyer and the recipient of the gift. The packaging also provides attractive merchandising in the retail trade to show the product off to maximum advantage.

The chairman of the jury, Satkar Gidda (SiebertHead), commented: “I can honestly say that every year the entries just keep getting better and better. Very well thought through designs with the consumer clearly front of mind – as it should be. The whole industry is constantly aiming to improve what has gone before and advancing step by step.”

The new Public Award made the reach of the Excellence Awards even wider. The eventual winner was Ventofor-Combi Pack produced by Lithosan from Turkey with the board coming from Metsä Board.
