A novelty item from a Canadian gourmet food company uses a faux beer can to package spices. Beer Can Chicken from Gourmet du Village, Morin Heights, Quebec, comes in a metal “beer can” with a phony pop-top tab. Inside the can, which actually has a reclosable lid, are three pouches containing about 1.2 ounces each of dry spices, or enough for one chicken per pouch. The consumer opens a real beer can, adds the spices, then “seats” the chicken upright on the can and places it on the grill. The beer and spices boil off inside the chicken, imparting flavor and moisture. The can retails for about US$8.75, or it can be bought as part of a kit that includes a rack for holding the can and the chicken. The kit retails for about US$20.
