The Frito-Lay unit of PepsiCo is dropping most uses of its compostable bag for SunChips after complaints that the bag made too much noise when handled. The SunChips pouch was the highest-profile use to date of packaging made from polylactic acid (PLA), a fact prominently touted on the bag. But complaints about the bag’s noise when crinkled went viral, becoming the subject of several Facebook pages and resulting in mainstream media coverage. Frito-Lay will keep original SunChips in the PLA bag but will revert to ordinary plastic film for its remaining SKUs. The company says it will continue to look for biodegradable film for SunChips that doesn’t present a noise problem.
