Foodservice packaging rewarded for innovation
Convenient stackable container made with sugarcane takes top honor
A to-go container made with sugarcane took home the top honor at the 2013 Foodservice Packaging Award ceremony held by Foodservice Packaging Institute, Inc. (FPI, fpi.org) and QSR magazine.
This year marks the seventh time the trade association and trade publication have collaborated on these awards, which recognize innovations in the foodservice packaging industry. More than 120 products were submitted, including cups, platters, lids, bags, utensils, straws and more.
“Foodservice packaging is an integral part of a consumer’s dining experience and is used in virtually all restaurants and other eateries,” says Lynn M. Dyer, president of FPI. “These industry awards reward better solutions for how foodservice operators provide their offerings to customers."
Judges reviewed entries based on innovation in brand delivery, convenience, performance, sustainability and the “wow” factor. Top award winners included Carvajal Pulp & Paper, Eco-Products, Georgia-Pacific Professional, Inventure Foods, Inc., MicroGREEN Polymers, Inc. and Yum Restaurant Co, Ltd.
Eco-Products received the“2013 Foodservice Package of the Year” for their stackable Folia take-out containers. Judges appreciated the convenience to operators for storing, filling and stacking and the practicality to consumers for the tear away flaps, separate compartments for food, condiments and cutlery. The packaging is made with 100% renewable and reclaimed resources, including sugarcane.
Recognized at the association’s Fall Meeting in Memphis last month, award recipients are featured in the November 2013 print and online editions of QSR. A complete list of winning entries may be found here.
