Glass manufacturers have taken a vow to use more than 50 percent recycled material in bottles and jars by 2013, according to the Glass Packaging Institute, which says that doing so could save enough energy to power over 45,000 households for a year. To improve glass recovery, manufacturers are proposing new on-premise bar, restaurant and hotel recycling initiatives, along with new curbside collection practices. The glass container recycling rate stood at 28.1 percent in 2007, according to U.S. EPA figures.
