Publix Super Markets is claiming to have kept 1 billion plastic bags from being used since its first reusable-bag initiative in 2007. The chain, based in Lakeland, Fla., says it has sold 13 million 99-cent reusable bags since introducing them in 2007. Publix also has implemented other ways to reduce bag use, including training its baggers to increase the number of items in each bag and donating reusable bags to non-profit organizations.
