A new coating technology
can be applied to food processing plant interiors to inhibit odors and reduce
bacterial contamination, according to its developer, Canadian-based Green Earth Nano Science.
The technology uses titanium dioxide (TiO2). Once a
surface is coated with TiO2, it remains self-sanitizing as long as
enough light is present to trigger its photo catalytic effect. This destroys a
bacteria cell’s wall and membrane, and reacts with the cell’s components,
inhibiting the bacteria’s activity.
Since
the coating does not use chemicals or wastewater, it reduces both environmental
footprint and operational costs.
