Where do mushrooms come from? They could come from packaging-at least that’s what Agata Jaworksa has proposed in her master’s thesis for the Design Academy Eindhoven in The Netherlands. Jaworska’s Made in Transit project describes a revolutionary supply chain concept where packaging is used as an environment for perishable products to actually grow. A package prototype illustrates the idea, demonstrating how spores might grow into oyster mushrooms during shipping and as the package sits in the store. Made in Transit was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s Design and the Elastic Mind exhibit in February. Jaworska is pursuing research at Wageningen University to bring the prototype to reality.
